On CBS News tonight, President Obama publicly weighed in for the first time on the controversy surrounding Hillary Clinton‘s use of a personal email account while she was Secretary of State. With questions lingering about how aware the White House was of this, CBS News senior White House correspondent Bill Plante asked Obama when he found out.
Obama said, “The same time everybody else learned it, through news reports.”
He praised Clinton’s public service and work as Secretary of State before saying, “the policy of my administration is to encourage transparency… and I’m glad that Hillary has instructed that those emails that had to do with official business need to be disclosed.”
Plante asked how that squares with Obama’s pledge to have the most transparent administration ever. Obama insisted Clinton “putting them forward” is a step in the right direction.
