A New York man left the United States to join ISIS. But it turned out to be far more disturbing than he expected, and he turned himself in to the U.S. consulate in Turkey. And now he’s speaking out.
Mo (as he was ID’d on NBC Nightly News tonight) attended Columbia University and told Richard Engel he was attracted to ISIS’ message of creating the ultimate Islamic state.
But after witnessing disturbing things like “severed heads placed on spiked poles” and someone showing off a suicide belt, Mo realized he made a mistake.
He told Engel, “That’s obviously the worst decision I’ve ever made in my life.”
Mo was arrested and faces up to 25 years in prison, but for the past year and a half he has been working with the government and providing intelligence.
