In his Rewrite segment tonight, Lawrence O’Donnell closed the book on what is presumably the final chapter of the Rand Paul–Chris Christie Minor Republican Policy Skirmish of 2013™. Paul ended up conceding and extending the olive branch to Christie, but O’Donnell couldn’t resist letting this go without some fun at Paul’s expense, particularly over Christie turning the “pork-barrel spending” charge back at Kentucky.
O’Donnell declared Christie the “winner” of the feud, and tore into Paul for attacking Christie’s “gimme gimme gimme” act, which O’Donnell explained was really just the governor of a state requesting money for victims of a horrible natural disaster. O’Donnell explained, “Like most Republicans, Rand Paul didn’t understand that New Jersey was simply asking for its own money back from Washington.”
He backed Christie for saying that New Jersey gets far less for every dollar it sends to Washington than Kentucky does, mocking the “relentlessly uninformed” Paul for thinking Kentucky’s two military bases would explain that difference, when New Jersey has… eight.
Paul said he’d be willing to shake Christie’s hand or kiss his ring or something like that. O’Donnell told Paul that in 2016, he will undoubtedly be shaking Christie’s hand, but it will be before and after Christie “beats the living heck out of you in those debates.”
