Oliver Skewers Media’s Obsession with Ebola Doctor’s Hipster Lifestyle
With New York City’s first Ebola case coming during a week in which The Daily Show was on vacation, John Oliver once again got the chance to tackle a major story before his former boss. What the Last Week Tonight host found particularly funny about this otherwise scary development was the way the media discussed Dr. Craig Spencer’s activities leading up to his positive Ebola test.
Oliver marveled at the “weirdly detailed rundown” from local officials of everywhere Dr. Spencer had been the day before he entered the hospital, including a bowling alley in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. “Of course he went to a bowling alley in Williamsburg,” Oliver said, “because if you’re talking about 33-year-old white New Yorker named Craig you don’t have to tell me he spent a weeknight at a bowling alley in Williamsburg, it is assumed.”
But even more ridiculous was the way the media talked about his “girlfriend” before officials revealed it was actually his “fiancée,” leading Oliver to believe the he was probably engaged before being diagnosed with Ebola. “Because if you learned one thing from that press conference, America, know this: There is no way an attractive Manhattan doctor is not engaged by 33,” he said. “You lock that shit down!”
