During his White House press briefing today, Director of the Office of Management and Budget Mick Mulvaney flatly dismissed the notion that President Donald Trump is to blame if a government shutdown happens at midnight.
Mulvaney was joined by White House Director of Legislative Affairs Marc Short, and they took turns slamming Congressional Democrats over the Senate gridlock preventing the passage of a new government spending bill. As they fielded questions from the White House press corps, NBC’s Peter Alexander brought up Trump’s remarks about “shithole countries” and asked Mulvaney: “what responsibility does the president bear for the challenges there have been to try to come to some deal.”
Mulvaney argued that Trump is trying to prevent a shutdown, whereas Barack Obama allowed the 2013 shutdown to happen so Congressional Republicans would take the blame.
“The president actively worked all day yesterday to try to get a bill through the House and continues conversations today,” Mulvaney said. “So there is no way you can lay this at the feet of the President of the United States.”
