On The 700 Club this morning, evangelist Pat Robertson offered up his rationale for why “miracles” seem to happen more often in Africa than in the United States: Because us “sophisticated” Westerners have been tainted by “secularism” while the “simple” foreigners are more willing to accept divine intervention.
A viewer asked Robertson why “miracles” like “people raised from the dead, blind eyes open, lame people walking … happen with great frequency in Africa, and not here in the USA?”
“Because those people overseas didn’t go to Ivy League schools,” the Christian broadcaster quipped.
“We are so sophisticated,” he said of Americans. “We think we’ve got everything figured out. We know about evolution, we know about Darwin, we know about all these things that says God isn’t real, we know about all this stuff.”
He bemoaned how “in many schools, in the most advanced schools, we have been inundated with skepticism and secularism” and thus, unlike the “simple and humble” foreigners overseas, we are unwilling to see miraculous events.
