Representative Paul Ryan appeared on CBS’ Face the Nation Sunday morning and told host Bob Schieffer that the House would not take up the Senate’s immigration reform bill, arguing instead for a piecemeal approach to immigration reform.
“We don’t support the Senate bill,” Ryan said. “We’ve been listening to the American bill. What we’re going to do is take a step-by-step approach to get immigration right. Not a big massive bill, but separate bills, so people know what’s in these bills.”
When Schieffer invoked Lindsey Graham’s statement that the GOP was in a “demographic death spiral” and needed to pass immigration reform to remain a viable national party, Ryan dismissed the Senator.
“I disagree that we should approach this issue based on what’s right for us politically,” he said. “We should approach this issue based on what we think is the right thing to do, what’s the right policy.”
