Paul Ryan to Lawmakers: ‘Don’t Capitalize’ on Ferguson
Representative Paul Ryan (R-WI) appeared on Fox & Friends Tuesday morning and told the troika that lawmakers needed to resist the temptation to exploit the events in Ferguson for their own gain.
“Don’t try to capitalize on this tragedy with your own policy initiatives,” Ryan said. “Don’t try to link some prejudged conclusion on what’s happening on the ground right now.”
“Really, I think we should take a deep breath, let’s have sympathy for the family and the community and let’s not prejudge anything and let’s let the investigation take its course and hope justice is served appropriately,” he continued. “But what I don’t want to do as a political leader is graft my policy initiatives or my preferences onto this tragedy. That would be disrespectful.”
Ryan added that it was fine for federal government to “play a role” in the investigation and response to protests, but that local authorities had jurisdiction and should retain control of the situation.
