Perry on Trump’s ‘Offensive’ Remarks: ‘Doesn’t Represent GOP’
Former Texas Governor and 2016 GOP candidate Rick Perry called Donald Trump’s remarks about undocumented immigrants “offensive” on This Week Sunday morning, and responded to Trump’s direct criticism of his handling of border security by accusing the celebrity plutocrat of not knowing what he’s talking about.
“I don’t think he understands the challenge,” Perry said. “My bet is Mr. Trump doesn’t know” about the measures Perry took last summer following the surge in immigrants, especially young ones, across the Texas border.
“Donald Trump does not represent the Republican party,” Perry added. “I was offended by his remarks. Hispanics in America, and Hispanics in Texas, from the Alamo to Afghanistan, have been extraordinary people…they have served nobly. To paint with that broad a brush — he’s going to have to defend those remarks. I never will.”
Trump’s comments on Mexican immigrants, whom he said we rapists and murderers, have put the rest of the GOP field in a tough spot just as the party was hoping to reach out to Hispanic voters. Senator and fellow 2016-er Ted Cruz (R-TX) saluted Trump for the comments last week.
