PJ O’Rourke Rips ‘Giant Toddler’ Trump For Puerto Rico Response: ‘Baghdad Was Put Back Together Faster’
P. J. O’Rourke ripped President Donald Trump on Wednesday over his press conference where he declared the response to Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico a roaring success.
“I think that Puerto Rico was an incredible, unsung success,” Trump told reporters on Tuesday, weeks after the death estimate on the island was raised to nearly 3,000. “I actually think it was one of the best jobs that’s ever been done with respect to what this is all about.”
Appearing on MSNBC, O’Rourke responded: “I covered the Iraq War. Baghdad was put back together faster than Puerto Rico, and they didn’t even like us.”
“Help me understand the president’s strategy here,” host Stephanie Ruhle asked the writer.
“It’s called lying,” O’Rourke replied. “There’s a technical term for it. It’s You just stand up there and lie, say ‘we did a great job.’ We did a terrible job.”
“He’s incapable of critical self reflection,” said Princeton University professor Eddie Glaude. “What’s interesting about that presser is that he didn’t mention one person who died.”
“He didn’t show any sense of empathy,” Glaude continued. “And that’s because in some significant way, Donald Trump is a deeply morally flawed human being.”
In a segment following a FEMA briefing, O’Rourke said that he thinks it’s wrong to “elevate Trump to evil.”
“Having raised three kids, I just think he’s giant toddler with no real connection to reality and no sense of empathy or responsibility,” he said.
“That’s really generous,” Glaude said. “I think toddlers that I know are empathetic.”
