Pompeo: U.S. Will Give Saudis ‘A Few More Days’ For Answers on Khashoggi, They’re an ‘Important Strategic’ Partner
Mike Pompeo held a brief presser at the White House Thursday to discuss the administration’s next steps amid the public outcry over Jamal Khashoggi‘s suspicious disappearance.
The Secretary of State returned to the United States Wednesday after meeting with the Saudi royal family — where he supposedly asked them about the allegations that Khashoggi was brutally murdered and dismembered inside their Istanbul consulate. Pompeo said he impressed upon the Saudis that the U.S. takes this matter “very seriously,” but he’s recommending that the White House “give them a few more days” to complete their own investigation and give the U.S. a chance to decide on how to respond.
“I think it’s important for us all to remember, we have a long strategic relationship with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia,” Pompeo said. “They continue to be important counterterrorism partner, they have custody of the two holy sites. They are an important strategic alliance of the United States, and we need to be mindful of that as well.”
Pompeo said Turkey is investigating Khashoggi’s disappearance as well, insisting that “between these two efforts, a complete picture will emerge for what actually transpired here, and we’re looking forward to that wrapping up quickly and we expect it will be done in that way.”
