President Obama In Joplin: ‘Cameras May Leave’ But We’re With You Until Joplin Is ‘Back On Its Feet’

President Obama arrived in Joplin, Missouri today to tour the areas devastated by the tornado and to deliver a heartfelt and well-received speech at the Joplin Memorial Service. Obama had many inspirational words for the community, saying “we can’t know why we’re tested” and often there are things “beyond our power to control . . . but that does not mean we are powerless in the face of adversity.”

Obama applauded how the Joplin community reacted in the aftermath of the damaging tornadoes, and suggested that world leaders have similarly expressed their amazement to him. According to Obama, Joplin has “shown the world what it means to love thy neighbor” and that “amid heartbreak and tragedy, no one is a stranger.” Additionally, he made mention of some of the fallen heroes who risked their lives to save others. Finally, Obama delivered “America’s promise” to the community that although “the cameras may leave,” the residents of the community should not fear because “we will be with you every step of the way until Joplin is restored and this community is back on its feet.”
