Rachel Maddow Falls For, Then Retracts, A Gary Johnson-Related Hoax

During MSNBC’s coverage of last night’s Iowa caucus, host Rachel Maddow fell for a hoax regarding former Governor of New Mexico Gary Johnson. And while that might not be the best of news for Maddow, it does give us a chance to write a Gary Johnson post! And that’s always fun.

During last night’s broadcast, Maddow reported that Johnson was dropping out of the race:

The former New Mexico governor Gary Johnson, who never got much traction in his effort to run for the Republican nomination, recently dropped out of a run for the Republican nomination to seek the Libertarian party’s nomination for president. We are hearing tonight that Gay Johnson has dropped his bid for the Libertarian and will instead be endorsing Ron Paul.

To her credit, Maddow later admitted that this was indeed not the case and that she’d merely fallen for a hoax. Caucus coverage co-host Ed Schultz then immediately changed the subject to everyone’s favorite casual dining establishment, the famed and fabled Pizza Ranch.
