Rachel Maddow: GOP’s Shutdown/Debt Ceiling Strategy Starting to Implode on Itself

Rachel Maddow opened her show Wednesday night highlighting the GOP’s record low poll numbers in the midst of the government shutdown. And, as Maddow put it, things aren’t going to get better anytime soon for them, because, as she put it, today their strategy “just collapsed.”

Maddow brought up the new spate of “denialism that the debt ceiling matters at all” and how Wall Street is now “freaking out” because they’re realizing some Republicans being okay with default means the U.S. could actually default. And that’s not good for anyone.

Maddow showed how conservative groups like Heritage Action and FreedomWorks are bailing from this fight, now saying the debt ceiling needs to be raised, period. She walked through how Republicans appear to be backing away from Obamacare in their fight over the shutdown, if Paul Ryan‘s omission is any indication. She said, “Whatever the strategy was before, it sort of evaporated today.”

And that was before the Kochs distanced themselves from this whole fight. Maddow concluded that “the wheels are really coming off here” and if these come-to-Jesus moments keep on coming, the shutdown fight may come to a swift end soon.
