Rachel Maddow Mocks Fox News for Overhyping Memo: ‘Kind of Like a Sad Trombone’

Rachel Maddow opened her show tonight by practically laughing out loud at what a dud the incredibly overhyped Nunes memo turned out to be.

Maddow even made a point of bringing up that time last year when she overhyped Donald Trump‘s tax returns, saying that at least when she overhyped something, “those actually were Donald Trump’s tax returns.”

“I can’t believe this is it,” she said of the Nunes memo.

Maddow acknowledged she was legitimately shocked by how after the weeks of Fox News hype, this was it, and she looked at how much her cable competitor was hyping and hyping this “for two solid weeks.”

“They promised the Fox News audience,” she said, “they promised the country, they talked a big portion of the normal media into believing they were about to shake the earth.”

Maddow was particularly amused by how the GOP claim that the “dossier started everything” was actually debunked in the memo itself, and said the memo landed today “like a sad trombone.”

And yes, she literally played the sad trombone noise.
