Rahm Emanuel Holds Presser to Announce Chicago Police Reforms: ‘Force Can Be the Last Option’

rahm emanuelChicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced a big overhaul of police training today, putting an emphasis on getting tasers into the hands of officers and ensuring that use of force is not always the first option.

Emanuel cut his vacation short yesterday amid uproar over the latest police shooting of a 19-year-old male and a 55-year old female. Even Al Sharpton really went after Emanuel on Tuesday morning.

Emanuel announced a number of police reforms during a press conference today to “rebuild the trust that our police officers need to do their job safely and effectively.”

He emphasized making sure officers have “the right tactics, the right training, the right technology to resolve tense situations safely and securely.”

The mayor said any officers involved in shootings will get 30 days of desk duty, and pledged a doubling of the number of tasers in the Chicago police force, with a renewed emphasis on training.

Emanuel said he wants to create more police situations where “force can be the last option, not the first choice.”
