Raj Shah Bemoans ‘Revision of History’ on Trump’s Record: ‘We Have Been Tough’ on Russia
White House deputy press secretary Raj Shah went to bat for Donald Trump today, touting the president as a man who stands up to Vladimir Putin.
The president has gone overtime on Twitter recently, slamming Barack Obama for not doing more to stop Russian election interference in 2016. Of course, Trump has dismissed Russian endeavors against American institutions as a “hoax,” and he has yet to expressly condemn the multiple Russian nationals Robert Mueller indicted for their actions in 2016.
Bill Hemmer asked Shah about this when he appeared on America’s Newsroom, and the press secretary insisted the government was at work to prevent future cyberhacking and other foreign threats to electoral systems. He also lamented that “there is a bit of a revision of history going on,” saying Trump held Russia’s feet to the fire a lot more than Obama ever did.
“This president has confronted Russia when appropriate,” Shah said. “We have been tough, we have been measured, we have been smart and appropriate in dealing with Russia. What you had under the Obama Administration was hot rhetoric and little results.”
Hemmer noted that Trump is under pressure to publicly condemn Russia, though Shah insisted the president did that over the past weekend and stands with America’s intelligence agencies. In the last few days, Trump attacked the FBI by suggesting that the school shooting in Parkland, FL could’ve been avoided if only the bureau wasn’t so preoccupied investigating Russia.
Shah also faced questions regarding the Rob Porter scandal and Mueller’s charges against a lawyer who lied to the FBI about his relationship with former Trump campaign aide Rick Gates.
