Rep. Grimm Turns Himself in to Federal Authorities
Representative Michael Grimm (R-NY) turned himself in to federal authorities Monday morning, most likely to face charges stemming from a business deal he completed before taking office.
The exact charges are unclear, but sources believe they involve financial deals made at Healthalicious, an Upper East Side restaurant Grimm owned. “The charges stem from his ownership of a Manhattan health-food restaurant that has ties to an Israeli fundraiser who served as a liaison between Grimm and a mystic, celebrity rabbi whose followers donated more than $500,000 to Grimm’s campaign in 2010,” the Washington Post reported in an amazing sentence.
Grimm has also been the target of a related inquiry concerning campaign fundraising irregularities. It is not clear whether the government will involve his campaign in the current charges.
His lawyer maintained his innocence in a statement:
“We are disappointed by the government’s decision, but hardly surprised. From the beginning, the government has pursued a politically driven vendetta against Congressman Grimm and not an independent search for the truth. Congressman Grimm asserts his innocence of any wrongdoing. When the dust settles, he will be vindicated.”
Grimm’s attorney said he expected bail to be set between $150,000 and $200,000.
You may remember Grimm from the time he threatened to throw a NY1 reporter off the rotunda balcony for asking about corruption allegations.
