While President Donald Trump’s lawyers came close to saying it over the weekend, one Republican lawmaker is making it plain.
Texas Rep. Louie Gohmert told reporters on Wednesday he thought Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia, should be fired.
According to ABC News reporter Ben Siegel, Gohmert said Mueller should be fired, and the only reason it hasn’t happened yet is because of warnings from his fellow Republicans:
Rep. Louie Gohmert: “Mueller should be fired.”
He says the only reason it hasn’t happened is because some Republicans have said it’s an impeachable offense.
“It’s not,” Gohmert says.

Gohmert’s comments come as Trump ramps up his criticisms of Mueller and his investigation. After a weekend slamming the political makeup of Mueller’s team, on Wednesday he called into question the existence of the special counsel.
A number of other Capital Hill reporters took to Twitter to note Gohmert’s stunning remarks:
Rep. Louie Gohmert: “Mueller should be fired;” pushes back at some Senate Republicans and says a firing wouldn’t be impeachable. “I’m not calling for him to be fired because of all the establishment Republicans who think they’d have to [come after] Trump if he were” fired.
