Rep. Matt Gaetz: Are Democrats Seriously Negotiating For Illegal Immigrants During the Shutdown
Saying he knows who President Donald Trump is negotiating for over the partial government shutdown, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) pondered on Wednesday if the Democrats are preferring to lobby for illegal immigrants instead of the American people. The shutdown that started over the issue of funding for a border wall has now entered its 12th day.
“What the president is not willing to compromise on are the outcomes,” Gaetz told Fox News. “I think he is willing to negotiate inputs, whether it’s more or less wall, more or less fencing, or slats, or drones or technology. What he is not going to compromise on is the safety of the American family or the protection of the American economy that’s needed.”
Because Trump wants to ensure there is no massive flow of illegal immigrants that could be hurtful to the American economy, Gaetz said he knows who Trump is negotiating for but can not say the same for Democrats.
“I don’t really who Democrats are negotiating for. I mean, are they really negotiating for illegal immigrants,” he asked.
With the new Congress set to be sworn in on Thursday, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) released a joint statement outlining their plan to end the shutdown.
“The first bill would reopen all government agencies except for the Department of Homeland Security – not taking a position on the President’s wall,” they explained. It would simply continue the funding levels and language that both parties have already supported. The second bill would extend the Department of Homeland Security’s funding through February 8, which Republicans already supported in recent weeks.”
