Rep. Peter King: No ‘Silver Bullet’ to Getting Putin Out of Crimea

Representative Peter King (R-NY) told Meet the Press host David Gregory that while there was no “silver bullet” to pressuring Russia out of the Crimean peninsula, the U.S. had a menu of sanctions options and military support to offer neighboring countries of Russia that could increase pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“The first thing to hit home would be to freeze the assets of Russian oligarchs in this country and across the world.”

“We have to increase military support for the Baltic states, increase military support for Poland and Hungary, and make it absolutely clear that these sanctions are going to be enforced, and make sure that the allies are working together,” King said. He added: “There’s no silver bullet. We have to sustain it and keep it going.”

King agreed with Gregory that energy policy could be the U.S.’s “best offense.”

“We have enough to supply so many countries in the world,” King said. “We should, right now, start lifting restrictions. We should begin the exporting as quickly as we possibly can. That’s not going to work in the short term, but it can relieve some of the pressure, and it can help these countries set their long term policy, to realize they are not going to be bound to Russia for natural gas.”
