Rep. Rogers: Putin ‘Goes to Bed Thinking of Peter the Great, Wakes Up Thinking of Stalin’
House Intelligence Committee Chair Mike Rogers (R-MI) told Meet the Press’ David Gregory Sunday morning that Russian President Vladimir Putin had not exhausted his aggression in Ukraine, and would likely continue to take territory unless the United States came to grips with him as trying to reconstitute a Russian empire.
“It certianly appears by everything that Ukrainian intelligence officials believe, certainly U.S. intelligence officials believe, that Putin is not done in Ukraine,” Rogers said.
“He goes to bed at night thinking of Peter the Great and wakes up in the morning thinking of Stalin,” he continued. “We need to understand who he is and what he wants. It may not fit with what we believe in the 21st century, but that’s not who he is or what he wants to accomplish. We need to be a little bit tougher with Putin, or he is going to continue to take territory that he believes is rightfully Russia’s.”
Rogers recommended that the United States send military aid to Ukraine, including small arms and medical supplies, believing that would show resolve toward Putin without committing to boots on the ground.
