Reporter on Nervous Dems: ‘There’s a Major Opening to Be the Hillary Rival’
A CNN politics panel on Monday noted that Democrats, typified by Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick, are concerned that the air of “inevitability” surrounding former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s prospective presidential campaign might work against her as it did in 2008. One panelist observed that they “do not want to see a coronation,” but there have been few Democrats willing to commit to openly challenging her.
“I think that he is expressing the concerns of a lot of Democrats who do not want a coronation,” New York Times reporter Jonathan Martin said. He added that they want to see a candidate with a more compelling message than “it’s my turn slash I am ready for this.”
“When is some Democrat going to step into the arena here?” The Washington Post’s Robert Costa asked. “There’s a major opening here to be the Hillary rival.”
Costa added, however, that the Democratic Party’s top talent has thus far remained on the bench and only Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) has openly contemplated mounting a challenge to Clinton in 2016.
“I just don’t see any energy from Governor Patrick or other Democrats to really step in the ring,” Costa concluded.
