‘Reprehensible’: De Blasio, NYPD Commish Tear Into Cruz Over Muslim ‘Patrols’

de blasio bratton cruzNew York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton both felt the need to strongly condemn Ted Cruz earlier tonight over his proposal to “patrol and secure Muslim neighborhoods.”

Cruz said that’s needed in the wake of Brussels to root out radicalism, but de Blasio said today, “It’s reprehensible. his comments are not about safety and security, it’s demagoguery.” He pointed to the 900 Muslim-American officers in the NYPD and said “to paint an entire community with that brush is counterproductive” and “immoral.”

But Bratton was somehow much harsher:

“I would remind the senator that he lives in the United States of America, and the statements he made today is why he’s not gonna become the president of this country, because we don’t need a president that doesn’t respect the values that form the foundation of this country.”

Cruz defended his proposal by saying the NYPD had a similar program that was successful. Last November, Bratton himself said, “Not one single piece of actionable intelligence ever came out of that unit in its years of existence.”
