Rick Perry: ‘The Actions I Took Were Not Only Lawful and Legal, but Right’
A bold Gov. Rick Perry appeared at an Austin, Tex. courthouse to be processed for his indictment, but delivered a statement to the press waiting outside: “If I had to, I would veto money for the Public Integrity Unit again.”
The three-term governor was indicted last week by a grand jury, which accused him of corruption — specifically, for following through with a threat to defund Texas’s Public Integrity Board, an act that Perry said was completely within his constitutional powers as governor.
“I’m here today because I believe in the rule of law, and I’m here today because I did the right thing,” Perry said, to raucous cheers from his supporters. “I’m going to enter this courthouse with my head held high, knowing that the actions that I took were not only lawful and legal, but right.”
“There are important, fundamental issues at stake, and I will not allow this attack on our system of government to stand,” he concluded.
