Rick Santorum Announced He’s Running for President and Nobody Noticed

Rick Santorum can’t get no respect. No regard, neither.

The former senator and unexpectedly durable 2012 primary contender told the Washington Post Tuesday he was all in for 2016.

This wasn’t exactly a surprise — Santorum is not subtle about his ambitions — but in a cable news landscape obsessed to the point of parody with prying 2016 tidbits out of potential candidates, Santorum’s announcement landed with a thud. Fox & Friends First picked it up for a quickie announcement. CNN’s Inside Politics, a show as insidery as its title suggests, did one segment on it. That was it.

Santorum did give his announcement to the Post, which suggests his initial audience may have been the Beltway crowd (and their funders). But it appears the major news outlets remain more fascinated with glitzier names like Ted Cruz, Rand Paul, Mitt Romney 3.0, and even Lindsey Graham than they are with Santorum.

If so, their mistake. Santorum outlasted his more headline-grabbing, cable-news-clip generating opponents in 2012. And, as the WaPo interview makes clear, he prefers to think of himself as underdog. Lack of early media coverage is a good way to bolster that image.

Watch CNN’s clip on him, which is for this scribe’s money is an accurate diagnosis:
