Rick Warren To Jake Tapper: Christians Have Big ‘Sticking Points’ With Some Mormon Beliefs

Jake Tapper had a rather in-depth one-on-one interview today on This Week with Evangelical pastor Rick Warren. Tapper turned the mostly religious discussion in a decidedly political direction when he brought up the 2012 presidential race and the historical significance of Romney’s Mormon faith should he be the nominee. Tapper asked Warren if he considers Mormons to be Christians. Warren did not give a yes or no answer, but he did acknowledge some issues he and many Christians have with the Mormon church.

Warren said one of the most crucial sticking points in the Christian faith is the issue of the Holy Trinity, and noted that the Mormon faith absolutely “denies that.”

“They’ll use the same terminology, but they don’t believe in the historic doctrine of the Trinity. And people have tried to make it other issues, but that’s really one of the fundamental differences.”
