Romney Defends GOP Fundraising Off Benghazi Hearings

Trey Gowdy, the Republican congressman running the Benghazi select committee, doesn’t like the idea of any Republican fundraising off of Benghazi. But on Morning Joe Friday, Mitt Romney argued that there is nothing wrong with Republicans fundraising with the pitch that Congress will only investigate Obama administration abuses as long as the GOP is in charge in Congress.

Gowdy has said it’s inappropriate for anyone to be raising money on the backs of four dead Americans (around the same time the NRCC made a fundraising pitch about the Benghazi hearings). But Romney argued that the Republicans have the right to argue that “if Republicans were not in the Congress, if Republicans did not have a majority in the Congress, there would not be an investigation into Benghazi.”

In Romney’s belief, fundraising off Benghazi should highlight the importance of electing Republicans to keep the pressure on the White House:

“There would not be an investigation of Benghazi, there would not be an investigation into the IRS were there not a Republican House. And so, to say elect Republicans so that we can have these kinds of investigations is appropriate.”
