Romney Surrogate To Chris Wallace: Mourdock’s Rape Comment ‘Not An Issue’
While discussing on Fox News Sunday the extent to which GOP Senate candidate Richard Mourdock‘s controversial rape comments will affect presidential challenger Mitt Romney‘s electoral chances, Romney surrogate and current Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson dismissed the issue altogether, saying that voters mostly care about the administration’s handling of the September 11th attacks on a U.S. consulate in Benghazi.
“Why should a woman who believes in freedom of choice when it comes to abortion, why should she vote for Mitt Romney?” host Chris Wallace asked the Republican senator.
“I’ve had one person talk about the abortion issue during this entire campaign,” replied Johnson, adding that the issue does not “move the needle” with voters in his home state of Wisconsin.
Unsatisfied with the answer, Wallace challenged him further: “But sir, if I may, on the question of abortion?”
“It’s not even an issue here in Wisconsin. It doesn’t even move the radar at all,” said Sen. Johnson. “What people are concerned about, like I said, yesterday it was unbelievable how many people came up to me demanding answers on Benghazi.”
“That’s really the question that’s on the table: What happened in Benghazi?” he concluded. “Abortion doesn’t even show up.”
