S.E. Cupp: People May Complain About TV Focus on Trump, But ‘There’s a Reason Ratings Are Up’
Conservative HLN host S.E. Cupp on Wednesday addressed complaints that the media is too focused on President Donald Trump, telling viewers that if they want to hear less about Trump, then “move to Canada” because “there’s a reason ratings are up” in the U.S.
“You’ve got to admit,” Cupp said, “Trump has been good for business. And vice-versa.”
“Complain all you want,” Cupp told her viewers, “but there’s a reason ratings are up. Y’all are watching. Secondly, this presidency is so singular, so controversial, and so abnormal, we would be derelict for ignoring it. If you want less news about the president, move to Canada where the president makes less news.”
Cupp took issue with people saying that the media don’t cover other important stories. Cupp said that if ratings were not an issue, then she would “spend the whole hour every day talking about the Syrian civil war, child hunger here at home, and Rohingya refugees.”
“But,” Cupp said, “you would turn me off five minutes in. You know you would. You’ve done it. I have the numbers.”
Cupp’s blunt acknowledgment came just days after New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof called out the “all Trump, all the time” media.
Kristof told CNN’s Brian Stelter Sunday that because the media covers Trump so often, they “risk not covering a lot of really important things at home and around the world.”
