Samantha Bee is Hosting Her Own Trump Roast the Night of the White House Correspondents Dinner
The White House Correspondents Dinner typically involves journalists hanging out with celebrities and members of the Trump administration. A comedian roasts the President and everyone else in the room at the event, which is known as “nerd prom.”
Under President Donald Trump, things might be different. His relationship with most journalists is strained on its best day, and his attacks on Saturday Night Live when they’ve made fun of him indicate he may not be interested in the “roast” portion of it.
Thanks to Full Frontal host Samantha Bee, whether or not Trump gets mocked in Washington, D.C. on April 29th is not up to Trump. According to The New York Times She’s decided to host the “Not the White House Correspondents’ Dinner” on the same night, and she’s inviting comedians to come make fun of our Commander in Chief.
Bee told the paper that they are “Not trying to supersede” the dinner. “We just want to be there in case something happens — or doesn’t happen — and ensure that we get to properly roast the president.”
It’s not implausible that there would be no dinner this year, or, if there were, that it wouldn’t take its traditional form. Trump has already gotten a taste of what it might be like for him. In 2011, Seth Meyers took shots at what was then just a possible candidacy and, of course, made fun of his hair. In 2016, he didn’t go to the event at all and blamed the media.
