During last night’s episode of Full Frontal, Samantha Bee took a look back at February to see whether America truly reflected the themes of Black History Month.
Bringing up subjects like the #OscarsSoWhite controversy and the current Supreme Court obstruction against President Obama, Bee lamented how things weren’t going so well for the month that celebrates “the progress [Black people] have made despite our best efforts.”
Bee invited show writer Ashley Black on stage with her to discuss, which led to a talk about how politicians and commentators have tarnished the month’s theme by repeatedly slamming modern social justice movements.
“Stop pretending you would’ve marched with Martin Luther King when you don’t like anyone who’s marched since,” Black said. “You know what’s not cool? Using Martin Luther King as a cudgel to beat Black people with.”
Bee apologized for this February being the worst Black History Month ever, to which Black said she was announcing her own movement: #BlackNowMonth.
“It’s when you stand up for black people who are alive now in real life and not just your imagination of the ’60s,” Black said.
