Sarah Sanders Grilled on Trump Threatening to ‘Punish’ Critics by Revoking Security Clearances
Sarah Huckabee Sanders was grilled by reporters on Monday after announcing that the White House wants to yank security clearance away from ex-intelligence officers who have spoken critically about President Trump.
The press secretary announced that the Trump administration is looking at ways to revoke security clearance from John Brennan, James Comey, James Clapper, Michael Hayden, Susan Rice and Andrew McCabe. Sanders accused these intel figures of using their security clearances to make “baseless accusations” to attack the president, so she faced a broad series of questions about whether Trump is trying to politicize national security to attack his enemies.
“The president is threatening to punish Brennan and Comey and Clapper for saying things about him that he doesn’t like. Is that presidential?” one reporter asked.
“The president is exploring these mechanisms to remove security clearance because they’ve politicized and, in some cases monetized, their public service and their security clearances,” Sanders answered. “The president contends that the fact that people with security clearances are making the baseless charges provides inappropriate legitimacy to accusations with zero evidence.”
“So their free speech, he doesn’t like, and he wants to punish them for it?” Sanders was asked in response.
