Sarah Sanders Hits Pentagon Officials on Claims They Were Out of Loop on North Korea
During today’s White House press briefing, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders pushed back on reports that top Pentagon officials and White House insiders were taken by surprise over the announcement that President Donald Trump agreed to a meeting with North Korea dictator Kim Jong Un.
“Top officials at the White House and Pentagon seemed to be taken by surprise,” MSNBC’s Kristin Welker asked. “Was this done in a haphazard way?”
“No, not at all,” Sanders replied. “This has been going on for over a year. Just because individuals that may leak to the press weren’t involved didn’t mean that the appropriate parties that lead those agencies were not in the room and not part of that discussion.”
Welker also wanted to know if it was appropriate for Trump to give reports in the briefing room a heads-up about the upcoming news before reaching out to the Chinese president and other international partners.
“We’ve had ongoing conversations with leaders across the world,” the press secretary noted. “The president simply said there would be an announcement. He had several conversations with world leaders both last night and today.”
