Sarah Sanders Says it’s ‘Ridiculous’ to Accuse Trump of Lying Hours After He Lied
Hours after Donald Trump lied about his knowledge of the Stormy Daniels hush money payment, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters at today’s press briefing that it is “ridiculous” to accuse the president of lying about the controversy.
Sanders was asked about Michael Cohen‘s claims that he was directed by Trump to make payments to women accusing him of affairs. Cohen, Trump’s former lawyer, pleaded guilty on Wednesday to felony campaign violations for those payments
“As the president said, we’ve stated many times, he did nothing wrong. There are no charges against him. And we’ve commented on this extensively,” Sanders said. “Again, I’m not going to get into the back and forwards details. I can tell you, at the president stated on numerous occasions, he did nothing wrong. There are no charges against him in this. Just because Michael Cohen made a plea deal doesn’t mean that implicates the president on anything.”
When asked specifically if Trump “lied” about the matter, Sanders said, “That’s a ridiculous accusation. The president has done nothing wrong in this matter and there are no charges against them.”
Just hours before Sanders called the question of whether the president lied “ridiculous”, Trump told Fox & Friends that he didn’t know about the payments at the time, but only found out about them “later on.”
Cohen, of course, released a tape just last month, recorded during the 2016 campaign, in which he and Trump discuss a payment to silence Playboy model Karen McDougal.
