On Wednesday, Anthony Scaramucci gave an interview to CNN where he blatantly called Donald Trump a “liar,” even if that fact doesn’t mean anything to the president’s supporters.
The interview began with the former White House communications director insisting that Trump is “not a nationalist.” Trump has embraced the word as a label for himself over the last few days, though the Mooch told John Berman that he’s only doing that to push buttons and upset his media critics.
Eventually, the conversation moved towards Scaramucci’s recent comments where he admitted that Trump can keep lying to the country on a regular basis, and the only people who really care are the “intellectual elites.” This prompted Berman to ask the Mooch if Trump “knows he’s lying.”
“I think he does. He likes it, actually,” the Mooch said.
Here’s how the conversation continued:
Berman: “What would you call somebody that likes lying?”Scaramucci: “Like a rascal, a scoundrel. There’s a smirk on his face when he is doing it, and there’s an entertainment aspect to it. When he goes to a rally like that, there’s a level of embellishment there because he’s playing to the crowd and playing for the laughs. You know, that has been his persona and style…”Berman: “I asked you what do
you call somebody that likes to lie, and you say a scoundrel. Another thing you can call somebody that likes to lie is a liar. Is he a liar?”Scaramucci: “We both know that he is telling lies. If you want me to say he’s a liar, I’m happy to say he’s a liar, but I am telling you that those people that I wrote about in the book and the research that I did on it…they care way less about that, John.”
Eventually, Scaramucci turned to the camera on Berman’s prompting and offered a message to Trump.
“Nobody should lie but you’re a politician now so politicians lie when their lips are moving … You don’t need to. You’re doing a great job for the country so dial that down and you’ll be doing a lot better.”
