Scarborough Concedes to Fact-Checkers, But: ‘This Is the Clinton’s Big Defense?’
Media Matters and PolitiFact took Morning Joe host Joe Scarborough to the woodshed over his claim that Algeria had donated to the Clinton Foundation in hopes that then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton would remove them from the terror list. On Thursday morning, Scarborough argued they were splitting hairs, and that the Clintons still had some ‘splaining to do.
Clinton surrogate Howard Dean alleged Scarborough was inventing Clinton allegations, and used the Algeria claim as proof. “Joe, you have an obligation not to say stuff like this on a very popular morning show,” said Dean, who’s new here.
Algeria was not on the terror list, which is rather short. Howevs, per PolitiFact, “its hands are not clean when it comes to human rights, which is most likely what Scarborough was trying to recall on air.”
“This is the Clintons’ big defense, that I talked about a terror list instead of horrible human rights abuses,” Scarborough said. “And so now they’re going, ‘Oh, well, it’s a false claim!’ Okay, so I got it wrong. It was about gross horrible human rights violations that may have been whitewashed by the state department instead of a terror list. And this is the Clinton great defense.”
