Bob Schieffer: Remember ‘How Hard It Is to Do a Cop’s Job Right’
Like David Brooks, Face the Nation host Bob Schieffer began his career on the police beat, and said it gave him important perspective on the current debate over use of force by law enforcement officials, a debate recently rekindled by the shooting deaths of Eric Harris and Walter Scott.
“This is about all the cops you don’t read about,” Schieffer said. “Most of the time the police deal with [criminals] humanely and as they should. What we overlook is just how difficult that can be sometimes.”
“I spent my early years listening to some of these awful people [criminals] and sometimes I wanted to hit them myself,” Schieffer added. “I didn’t, but it helped me understand how hard it is to do a cop’s job right. As hard as it is, the great majority of our cops still do.”
Contra to Schieffer, many worry that the individual instances of police abuse caught on video are revealing a larger and systemic problem.
