Schumer Says Trump ‘Slammed the Table’ and Stormed Out of Meeting Over Wall; Trump Tweets: ‘Waste of Time’
It appears Democrats and Republicans were unable to come to an agreement to end the partial government shutdown after a meeting at the White House on Wednesday.
Speaking with reporters outside the West Wing after the meeting, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said President Donald Trump asked Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) if she would fund the wall, and when she said no, he got up from the table.
“And he just got up and said, ‘Then we have nothing to discuss,’ and he just walked out,” Schumer recalled. “Again we saw a temper tantrum because he couldn’t get his way and just walked out of the meeting. I asked him to open up the government ”
Schumer said after he asked Trump to consider federal worker’s increasing financial struggles and Trump said he would not open the government until he got his way, “and then a few minutes later he sort of slammed the table and when leader Pelosi didn’t agree with the wall he just walked out and said, ‘we have nothing to discuss.'”
After the meeting, Trump tweeted how the meeting was “a total waste of time” and when Pelosi refused to agree to a wall, ‘I said bye-bye, nothing else works!'”
Just left a meeting with Chuck and Nancy, a total waste of time. I asked what is going to happen in 30 days if I quickly open things up, are you going to approve Border Security which includes a Wall or Steel Barrier? Nancy said, NO. I said bye-bye, nothing else works!
