Schumer: Trump’s Tweet This Morning Made Sure Meeting Was ‘Nothing But a Photo Op’
Senate Democrats Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi declined to attend a meeting with President Donald Trump today after his derisive “Chuck and Nancy” tweet:
Meeting with “Chuck and Nancy” today about keeping government open and working. Problem is they want illegal immigrants flooding into our Country unchecked, are weak on Crime and want to substantially RAISE Taxes. I don’t see a deal!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) November 28, 2017
And Schumer made brief comments to reporters after the president met instead with Republican lawmakers.
“With his tweet this morning,” Schumer said, “President Trump made sure that today’s meeting is nothing but a photo op. These issues are far too serious for these kinds of games. Mr. President, it’s time to stop tweeting and start leading.”
Both he and Pelosi are now asking for a meeting with Republican Senators Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan:
Given that @POTUS doesn’t see a deal btwn Dems & the White House, we believe the best path fwd is to cont. negotiating w/ our GOP counterparts in Congress instead. Rather than going to the White House for a show meeting, we’ve asked @SenateMajLdr & @SpeakerRyan to meet this pm.

Rather than going to the White House for a show meeting that won’t result in an agreement, we’ve asked @SenateMajLdr & @SpeakerRyan to meet this afternoon. Read my full statement w/ @SenSchumer here: https://t.co/v17WhoEJFU
