Sean Spicer broke from the Trump camp in an interview with NBC’s Today show on Thursday, saying he has seen “no evidence” that Special Counsel Robert Mueller‘s probe is a “witch hunt.”
On to promote his upcoming book about his brief and hilarious tenure as White House press secretary, Savannah Guthrie asked Spicer if he agreed with the president that the investigation into the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia is witch hunt.
“As of now, I’ve seen no evidence that it is,” Spicer said.
“I think that it’s been going on a long time, and I think there’s two issues,” he continued. “One, as I mentioned earlier, there’s the collusion which we’ve seen no evidence of so far.”
“Well the investigation is ongoing,” Guthrie pointed out. “There have been three guilty pleas from former Trump associates.”
“Correct, fair enough,” Spicer conceded. “That have nothing to do with actually collusion. They have to do with lying and not registering properly.”
“But why would you lie to federal investigators?” Guthrie retorted.
“I don’t know. I wouldn’t. But with respect to the meddling, that’s another thing. And I’ve seen, you seen multiple Russians indicted by special prosecutor Mueller,” he said.
