On CNN’s State of the Union today, Senator Lindsey Graham believed the presidential race would be decided by not just President Obama’s record in office, but the record and ideology of the Republican nominee.
Graham said that for the Republicans, this is their race to lose, citing President Obama’s less-than-impressive record in office over the past two years.
President Obama has done everything he knows how to do to beat himself. The reason people have little confidence in President Obama’s policies: they’re just not working. Everything is worse. Two million people unemployed after he took office. Gas prices are a hundred percent higher, home values are down, debt’s up by 35 percent. There seems to be no relief on the horizon.
Candy Crowley asked Graham if there are any Republicans running who would be considered “unacceptable alternatives.” Graham did not give a direct answer, but predicted that any Republican with a chance against Obama would have to propose an ambitious business plan starting from day one. He also expressed his hope that the Congressional “super committee” will tackle entitlement reform in the months to come. However, Graham disagreed with Governor Rick Perry‘s characterization of Social Security as a “Ponzi scheme,” instead advising all Republicans to call it “a vital program.”
