Sen. McConnell on Fox: We Knew Shutdown Strategy ‘Was a Mistake Back in July’

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell admitted the Fox’s Bret Baier Monday evening that he knew the Republican strategy to shut down the government in opposition to the Affordable Care Act “was a mistake back in July.”

McConnell was responding to a new poll from CNN showing that 54% of Americans think Republican Party control of the House if “bad” for the country. “Certainly shutting down the government was a flawed strategy,” McConnell said. “It was a mistake. We knew it was a mistake back in July. But others decided to pursue this strategy.”

The senator said what the GOP needs to do now that the shutdown is over is “move on,” but continue to focus on Obamacare. “To fully repeal Obamacare is going to require changing the Senate and changing the White House,” he said. “In the meantime, in order to pick it apart, because there are 55 Democrats and only 45 Republicans in the Senate, a number of them are going to have to join us in saying we ought to get rid of various parts of it.”
