Senator Calls on DHS Head Nielsen and Sarah Sanders to Resign in Blistering Rebuke: ‘They Have Sold Their Souls’

Senator Mazie Hirono (D-HI) tore into Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen and White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders on Tuesday, following their brutal press conference in which a horde of fired up reporters grilled them on Trump’s immigration policy.

Hirono appeared on Morning Joe to discuss the administration policy of separating migrant children from their families at the southern border, and accused Republicans in the House of slow-walking an immigration compromise.

She then trained her sights at the White House.

“We just heard that there may be more tougher immigration policies coming down the pike from the likes of Stephen Miller,” she said, referring to Trump’s young policy adviser, a hardliner on immigration.

“To me, Stephen Miller is like Iago whispering in the president’s ear, along with John Kelly,” she continued. “These people are totally anti-immigrant.”

MSNBC’s Willie Geist noted that Hirono is calling on those who lie for the Trump administration to resign, and asked who she included on that list.

“Well, let’s start with the secretary of Homeland Security,” the senator replied, referencing Nielsen’s briefing from Monday.

“She was trotted forward to put… a nice frame to this, calling it ‘not a policy’, that’s a lie,” Hirono said. “Sarah Huckabee Sanders lies on a regular basis. All the people around the president who lie for him in order to keep their jobs, they have sold their souls. I would welcome their resignations.”
