Sensitive Trump Dodges Tough Question by Bickering With Cuomo: ‘You Should Congratulate Me!’

It took less than a minute for the presumptive Republican nominee to begin sparring with CNN’s Chris Cuomo at the beginning of their interview Monday morning on New Day. The real estate titan-turned-politician apparently woke up on the feisty side of the bed in Trump Towers this morning, as he took swipes at Cuomo’s questioning immediately before launching attacks at CNN in general for unfavorable coverage of his candidacy.

Cuomo started off by asking Trump about a line of rhetoric that has emerged from the campaign trail — “you are attacking Hillary Clinton for the sexual past and indiscretions of her husband,” he noted — a tactic that may give voters pause. “What is your thinking on this line of attack?” Cuomo furthered.

Did Trump answer the question? Not even close. “Well this is a nice way to start off the interview,” the presumptive nominee said with all the sensitivity of a kid in a candy store who was denied his Sour Patch Kids. “First of all, you should congratulate me for having won the race. I thought, you know, at least there would be a small congratulations but I’m not surprised with CNN because that’s the way they treat Trump.”

“You know, they call it the ‘Clinton Network,’ and I believe that. So, uh, let’s start off right there,” Trump continued to say during his phone-in hit.

“I said congratulations the last time we spoke!” clarified Cuomo.

Then the two grown men bickered over who said what, when, and to whom first, before Trump casually opined to the CNN morning show host, “I understand CNN perhaps a lot better than you do!”

But before Chris Cuomo even had the opportunity to present Trump with the hardened facts that he has attacked the marital infidelities of President Bill Clinton and connected them to Hillary Clinton’s candidacy, Trump out-Trumped himself and went on a long spiraling rant that included the following topics: trade, American armed forces (“our military’s being absolutely decimated”), the southern border, and drugs.

Not on the list? The low-blow criticisms aimed at the Clintons. During his robust rodomontade, Trump managed some more swipes at the very network he was being interviewed on. He said, “Nor does CNN ever show the crowds. I could be making a speech for an hour and they’ll never show the crowds!”

The Trumpaganda even forced Cuomo to sheepishly admit, “I would suggest CNN shows your events more than any other candidate.”

The conversation, albeit it awkwardly, eventually hobbled along to other subjects. But keen observers will recognize from the above video that one key subject got utterly unanswered by Trump as he threw a hissy fit about not being patted on the back for winning his blue “presumptive nominee” ribbon: the attacks on the “unbelievably nasty, mean enabler” of her own husband’s sexual affairs, Hillary Clinton, his likely general election opponent. Trump’s verbal flash grenade meant to distract the interviewer — and likely, the viewers at home — worked yet again.

Watch the above contentious exchange from CNN’s New Day.
