Seth Meyers Says People Blaming Dallas on #BlackLivesMatter Need to ‘Shut the F*ck Up’
Seth Meyers took a “Closer Look” last night at the Dallas Shooting, where he blasted those who rushed to blame the death of five police officers on the entirety of #BlackLivesMatter.
The Late Night host began by noting that it is possible to have a constructive conversation about fatal police shootings and racial disparities in criminal justice, without having every demonstration becoming hostile to law enforcement. Still, Meyers noted that it didn’t stop media figures from coming up with incendiary headlines, nor did it stop pundits from saying that anti-cop violence is all the fault of President Obama and social justice movements.
“Vitriol and inflammatory rhetoric only make it more difficult to have the kind of constructive dialogue we need right now,” said Meyers. “And while many offered calm sobering responses, others used the occasion to unfairly blame peaceful protesters or political opponents.”
Meyers particularly drilled into Rudy Giuliani for saying that the movement is “inherently racist” because their main concern happens to be about calling attention to racial injustice in the the justice system.
“The fact is, black people are disproportionately affected by racial disparities in our criminal justice system,” Meyers said. “‘Black Lives Matter’ is not an exclusionary statement. It just means black lives matter too.”
