Donald Trump announcing his 2016 bid late Tuesday morning was a blessing without disguise for late night comedy show writers and hosts everywhere. Hell, even Stephen Colbert — whose Late Show hasn’t even started yet — jumped in on the fun.
But it was Late Night host Seth Meyers whose seven-minute segment deliciously lapped up all the free comedic gifts that Trump’s announcement had to offer. Besides, considering Meyers’ last good opportunity to jab Trump was during his phenomenal 2011 White House Correspondents’ Dinner roast, it was time the comedian returned to his roots.
Like most late show hosts, Meyers picked Trump’s rambling speech apart, piece by piece. Yet it was Meyers’ focus on the business tycoon’s “I will build a great wall” sound bite that stands out — especially for its Game of Thrones-inspired bit of satire.
I’m not sure about president, but I do know a recently vacated position that could use a man with your kind of thinking, in regards to walls.
That image alone defines the entire bit, and honestly, all Meyers and his team could have done was present it to the audience. But the host continues, and it’s glorious.
