Al Sharpton confronted Republican congressman Doug Collins on Thursday night over Republican attempts to defund Obamacare, even as members of their own party are jumping ship left and right (mostly right). Sharpton scolded Collins for trying to do everything possible in order to take down a law that Cnogress already approved and the Supreme Court already upheld.
Collins told Sharpton plenty of Democrats have problems with the health care bill, bringing up President Obama‘s delay for provisions of the bill. Sharpton was astonished that “you are decideing that a law that was passed… you can decide not to fund,” saying it’s “not the basis of a democracy” to defund any law you choose.
Collins shot back that Congress controls the purse strings on everything, insisting that Republicans have no interest in shutting down the government. Sharpton pressed Collins to say on the record that he will not vote against any government funding bill that does not include Obamacare defunding. Collins simply insisted again the GOP does not want to shut down the government.
Sharpton shouted, “We thought we lived in a democracy with a balance of powers!” There was some squabbling over Collins telling Sharpton, “This isn’t a democracy, it’s a republic.” While Collins was correct that the American government is a democratic republic, Sharpton found Collins’ “admission” amusing.
