Sharpton: ‘You Can’t Kill Jobs Bills and Tell Men to Take Care of their Families’
Al Sharpton appeared on Meet the Press Sunday morning alongside Eric Garner’s widow Esaw Garner, and told host Chuck Todd that the acidic distrust between law enforcement and the African-American community was an economic issue as well.
“We, the National Action Network and the civil rights community, aggressively supported a jobs bill, support infrastructure development,” Sharpton said. “When we go and challenge men in our community to say, ‘You’ve got to stand up and you have to be responsible’ — they need jobs. They need training.”
“So we have to strike a balance that is not in our power to do, which is why we’re going at the Congress to make that possible,” Sharpton continued. “You can’t kill a jobs bills and infrastructure and then tell men to take care of their families. You can’t have it both ways.”
