Saturday night’s Miley Cyrus-hosted Saturday Night Live began with a sendup of the singer’s now-infamous Twerk-out at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards. The sketch was framed as a post-apocalyptic flashback, in which Kenan Thompson explains how people tried to warn Miley, backstage, that her VMA performance might not be a good idea, and might even result in the end of the world.
A string of would-be Cassandras try to warn Miley, including Vanessa Bayer as The Miley Cyrus Show host Miley Cyrus, Jay Pharoah’s Will Smith, and a Robin Thicke stand-in with flexible morals. The sketch pays off with a callback to Miley’s last hosting gig, in which she displayed a surprising comic knack as guest Justin Bieber on The Miley Cyrus Show.
